Breaking Stigmas in Urologic Care Kathryn Doherty (DO ’25)
March 28, 2025
From an early age, Kathryn Doherty (DO ’25) knew she wanted to become a physician, drawn to the meaningful connections formed between doctors and patients. That passion,
combined with her love for the basic sciences, led her to pursue medicine. Now, as
she prepares for the next chapter of her journey, Doherty is excited to return to
her hometown for residency—training in urology at Albany Medical College.
“Urologic diagnoses are often shrouded in stigma, and I find it gratifying to help
patients navigate all aspects of their conditions—physically and mentally,” she shared.
The specialty’s mix of procedures and long-term patient relationships solidified her
decision to pursue urology.
When she learned she had matched, Doherty experienced a whirlwind of emotions—shock, excitement, relief, and pride.
“All of the doubt and fear had been replaced with the excitement of accomplishing
a goal,” she said. Reflecting on her time at PCOM, she credits the faculty for their unwavering support, noting how even those who
didn’t know her personally were willing to offer guidance and connections.
As she prepares to care for patients in the community that shaped her, she encourages
first-year students to keep an open mind and embrace the journey ahead. “It’s challenging
and can be stressful, but it goes so quickly—and it will all be worth it in the end.”
