Match Day 2020
March 24, 2020In the midst of a global pandemic, students from the class of 2020 celebrated one
of the most exciting days in their professional journey—match day. Here they share
their personal match story, what has inspired them along the way and what advice they
would give to students starting the journey today.
What is your name, program and anticipated graduation year?
Jazmin C. Garcia, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Class of 2020
What inspired you to go into medicine?
My inspiration to go into medicine was a very personal one. My parents had bought
me various pretend physician toys when I was younger which I highly enjoyed playing
with. However, the true spark happened at the age of 8, when I witnessed my younger
brother (who was 1 at the time) experiences a febrile convulsion. I still remember
the day vividly; from the event to how the physicians and nurses cared not only for
my brother but also reassured my parents. It was as terrifying as it was interesting.
Where did you match?
Rutgers - Robert Wood Johnson
What specialty have you chosen to pursue and why?
I have chosen to pursue a career in pediatrics. I often would state the question should
be why not pediatrics because the truth is I could not imagine myself pursuing any
other career path. The joy I experience when treating my patients is truly something
that is difficult to describe in words. I also truly admire their resilience and ability
to look at the positives even in the darkest of times. And in all fairness, what other
health professionals are required to dress up for Halloween?
How did you feel when you matched?
I was in complete awe when I found out that I had matched and at my top choice. I
felt so excited as realization began to settle in that I would be completing my pediatric
residency training at Robert Wood Johnson is truly indescribable.
What advice would you give to year one medical students starting their journey?
You got this! Believe in Yourself!
They are not lying when they say medical school is a marathon and it often tests you
not only mentally but in all aspects of life. There will be times when things get
tough and you might not necessarily see the light at the end of the tunnel but I promise
you the light is there. You are here because we (the PCOM community) believe you are
capable of becoming a great physician and you should wholeheartedly believe that as
well!
What is one memory you will take with you from PCOM?
This is truly a difficult question to answer as there are many memories I will take
with me. PCOM became my second home during these last four years and many of my classmates
have become family. Some memories include orientation week, our white coat ceremony,
as well as the multiple events and interactions. I had a chance to be a part of it
during my time at PCOM. But one important unforgettable memory for me is actually
Match Day. It was amazing to see how our class came together and virtually celebrated
each other's achievements as we found out where we would be starting this new chapter
in our lives. I think that is very unique to our class and something no one (not even
COVID-19) can take away from us.
