Fitzgerald, a recipient of the Navy Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP),
kicked off the ride in Yorktown, Virginia, to follow the historic TransAmerica Trail—a
more than 4,000-mile route that will take him through 10 states before reaching the
Pacific Ocean in Astoria, Oregon. Only traveling with the essentials packed on his
bike, Fitzgerald is embracing the physical and mental challenges of the journey.
“I had this rare window of time before residency and wanted to take on a challenge
that pushed me physically and mentally,” Fitzgerald said. “A few months ago, I didn’t
even own a bike—and now I’m riding across America. This is something I’ll never forget,
and doing it in support of a cause that honors our nation’s fallen heroes gives every
mile a deeper meaning.”
The Travis Manion Foundation honors the legacy of 1st Lt. Travis Manion, a Marine
who lost his life in Iraq. The organization empowers veterans and the families of
those who served through leadership programs, community service initiatives, and mentorship
opportunities.
“This ride is a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice,” he said. “Along
the way, I’m reminded of the strength and kindness of people across this country.”
Fitzgerald is sharing updates and reflections throughout the trip on his Instagram and Facebook pages.
