PA School Interview Prep: How to Set Yourself Apart

April 10, 2025

Getting into PA school is a competitive and rigorous process. At PCOM, part of that process is an interview offered only to those who meet specified admissions criteria and are deemed competitive within the broader applicant pool. This interview presents applicants with an opportunity to demonstrate their motivation, communication skills, and fit for the profession.

Understanding the PA School Interview Process

The interview is not just about answering questions—it's a comprehensive assessment of your readiness for the profession. During the application review and interview process, PCOM considers numerous criteria, including:

  • Academic metrics (GPA, science GPA, coursework)
  • Clinical and healthcare experiences
  • Shadowing and volunteer work
  • Leadership and life experiences
  • Communication and decision-making skills
  • Personal attributes like motivation, professionalism, and preparedness
  • Alignment with the program's mission

This holistic review means you should be prepared to discuss not only your qualifications, but also your values, goals, and personal journey to the PA profession.

Advice from Current PA Students

At PCOM, interviews are typically held between August and February, but timing can vary. If you receive an invitation to interview, how should you prepare? Here are some tips from PCOM PA students who have been through the interview process:

  • Be Yourself: Ashley Levine emphasized the importance of authenticity, enthusiasm, and professionalism. "Everyone just wants to have a conversation and get to know you," she said.
  • Have Fun and Stay Relaxed: Alex Seymour encouraged applicants not to stress too much. "The staff just want to get to know you for who you are," she explained.
  • Prepare Thoughtful Questions: Tiffany Martin recommended coming equipped with questions or scenarios that demonstrate your preparation and interest in the program. Practicing these beforehand can boost confidence during the interview.
  • Practice Self-Reflection: Caylin Roszina focused on the need to be comfortable talking about yourself. "They truly want to know who you are as a person, not as a robot," she noted, urging applicants to spend time crafting authentic answers about their passions and experiences.
  • Showcase Your Unique Qualities: Loren Captain said candidates should highlight specific examples from their personal statements or application materials. "It’s a time to really show yourself off," she said, emphasizing the importance of speaking confidently about your accomplishments.
How to Prepare for Your PA School Interview: 5 Tips for Success
  1. Conduct Mock Interviews: Practice with friends, family, or mentors who can provide constructive feedback. Interviewers want to hear your story. Practice with friends, mentors, or even in front of a mirror so you’re comfortable and natural.
  2. Take Your Time: Don’t rush your answers; thoughtful responses are better than rushed ones.
  3. Do Your Homework: Come prepared with questions about the program. It shows that you’re thinking seriously about where you want to train.
  4. Be Professional: Dress appropriately, maintain eye contact, and engage respectfully with everyone you meet during the process.
  5. Know Your Application: Be ready to elaborate on any part of your personal statement, résumé, or experiences. If you included it on your application, you may be asked about it during the interview.
