Brandon Barnes (DPT ’22)
Residency Match 2022
March 17, 2022Students from the class of 2022 are celebrating the next step in their professional
journey. Here they share what has inspired them along the way and what advice they
would give to new students.
Where did you match?
Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute Orthopedic Residency, Houston,
Texas
What specialty have you chosen to pursue and why?
I am going to specialize in orthopedics. I chose this specialty and the Memorial Hermann
program specifically because it provides me with the opportunity to refine my differential
diagnosis and clinical reasoning skills. In this program I will also get to learn
from experienced mentors, work as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team, and
gain experience teaching and serving as a clinical instructor to physical therapy
students, which will make me a more well-rounded clinician.
How did you feel when you found out you matched?
When I found out I was offered the position at Memorial Hermann, I couldn't say "yes"
fast enough. I loved everything that I learned about the program during the interview
process, and I knew that it was the place that I wanted to be.
What advice would you give to year one physical therapy students just starting their
journey?
For physical therapy students who are interested in pursuing residency opportunities
after graduation, I would highly recommend talking with your professors. The faculty
at PCOM were extremely supportive and helpful throughout my search and application
process. I also suggest finding ways to improve your application throughout your time
at PCOM. Residency programs are highly competitive and taking steps to make your application
stand out, such as taking continuing education courses or conducting research as a
student, can make a huge difference.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
I would like to specifically thank Dr. Miller and Dr. Friberg for all of their help
and advice throughout the application process.
