April 1, 2020
In a recent letter to the Journal of the American Osteopathic Medical Association
(JAOA), titled, “More Information on Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Consultations
for Hospitalized Patients”, Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM)
Professor David Fuller, DO, FAAO, FNAOME, reported on OMM consultations used to treat hospitalized patients.
In addition to Fuller, the PCOM Hospital Consult Service includes other PCOM OMM faculty members Lauren Noto Bell, DO, Donald Allison, DO, Meghna Shah, DO, MPH, Andrew Levin, DO. They routinely make inpatient OMM consultations at Roxborough Memorial Hospital
in Philadelphia, PA.
By examining patient consultation data over a 12 month period, Dr. Fuller was able
to show that OMM hospital patient consultations are used for a variety of purposes
beyond the treatment of musculoskeletal problems. Conditions included patients with
respiratory conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia and
asthma. Hospitalized patients were also often treated as part of postoperative care,
especially abdominal surgery and gastrointestinal issues.
