    ebscohostSearching HealthSourcePlus & Academic Search Full TEXT  Research your topic in both EbscoHost collections utilizing outlined search functionalities.


    HealthSourcePlus
    provides abstracts and indexing for nearly 500 consumer health, nutrition and professional periodicals. Over 200 periodicals are covered in full text as well as over 1,000 health pamphlets. Also included is USP DI Volume II, Advice for the Patient which provides patient-oriented drug information in lay language and 17 health books published by the People's Medical Society.

    Academic Search Full TEXT provides abstracts and indexing for over 3,200 scholarly journals covering the social sciences, humanities, education and more. Also offers full text for over 1,000 journals with many dating back to 1990. Includes coverage of over 1,700 peer-reviewed journals.

    1) Click on E-Journals bullet on the PCOM Digital Library Home page.

    2)  In the News or E-Journal Collections section, click onEBSCOhost.

    3) Click on Login to Ebscohost

    4)  If  you are on campus and connecting through the PCOM network, no password is required.N
    Remote access is controlled by password. Call the library for password information.

    5) Check HealthSource Plus and Academic Search Fulltext Elite and click on Enter

    6) Enter keywords, click on Get Results
     
     Search Strategies

    7) From the toolbar, click on Keyword Search. Combine concepts using AND, OR and NOT as part of your keyword search (these Boolean operators define logical relationships between terms in a query).

    AND  -search results contains all of the terms (well AND child AND care)
    OR - search results contains at least one of the terms ( child OR infant OR pediatric OR ...)
    NOT - excludes terms so that results do not contain any of the terms that follow the NOT operator (well AND child AND care NOT day will eliminate "day care" as a concept).
     

    8) Click on Advanced. Enter discrete concepts in the search form.  Combine concepts using AND, OR and NOT. Search all fields or limit to title, subject, author, etc.

    9) From the toolbar, click on Natural Language Search to query the database using words, phrases or even complete sentences. The results of a query are presented in ranked order with the most relevant article being presented first.  The more words that appear in  an article, the more relevant the record is and the closer to the top of the Result List it will appear ("rising medical costs" or "preferred provider organization").
     
    10) From the toolbar, click on Browse Subjects to review a list of subject headings (similar to the Tools function in OVID).

    • Enter term(s) in the entry field, labeled "For". Click the BROWSE button and you will be alphabetically positioned on the browse list to the term(s) you have entered.
    • Browse the list by using the scroll bar or the arrow keys to move up and down the page.
    • Move up or down the alphabetized list by clicking on the UP and DOWN arrow buttons.
    • Click the item box next to the term(s) you wish to select. A check mark will appear (To deselect, click again).
    • Continue until you have made all your selections.
    • Click the GET RESULTS! button to begin searching.

    Browse Subjects Example: browsing VIOLENCE shows the narrower terms:
                Narrower Term...CHILDREN & violence
                 Narrower Term...CONJUGAL violence
                 Narrower Term...DATING violence
                 Narrower Term...FAMILY violence
                 Narrower Term...FIGHTING (Psychology)
                 Narrower Term...SCHOOL violence
                 Narrower Term...VIOLENT deaths
    Clicking on FAMILY violence, shows still narrower terms:
    FAMILY violence               Results = 105       Narrower Term...CHILD abuse
                                                                                Narrower Term...CONJUGAL violence
                                                                                Narrower Term...VICTIMS of family violence

    Limiting Searches

    11)  In Keyword or Natural Language searches, limit to Full Text by clicking on the Full Text box.
     
    12) In Keyword searches, use Proximity Search to define proximity and order of specific words.

             Near (N) will find the words if they are within x words of one another in any order.
                   "malpractice" N3  "reform" = malpractice tort reform, reform of malpractice laws, etc.
             Within (W) will find the words if they are within x words in the entered order.
                    "well W1 child" = well child or well-child

    Expanding  Searches

    13) In Keyword searches, click on also search for related words to include the synonyms and plurals of your term(s), and Search within full text articles-  to search for your keywords within the full text of articles, as well as abstract and citation information.

    14) In Keyword or Natural Language searches, use Wildcard(?) and Truncation(*) to expand retrieval.
                           Wildcard = one character.    wom?n = woman or women
                            Truncation = any number of characters.  comput* =  computer, computerize, computation, computing, etc.

    To Print or E-mail a record or records from the Result List

    15) The PRINT/E-MAIL button will appear on  the Result List Screen, and on the Full Record and Full Text screens. Click on this button to display print options.
        Citations: Use the mouse to click on the item box located to the left of the record. A check mark will appear in the box. To deselect a record, click on the box once again and the check mark will disappear.

    • Repeat until all desired records have been selected.
    • Click on the PRINT/E-MAIL button to display printing options.
    • When the Print/E-mail Screen displays, select: all records - to print the entire Result List, marked records - to print only marked records, or current record - to print the current record.
    • Select a bibliography format.
    • In the entry fields labeled "Name" and "Comments", enter the necessary information.
    • Choose a method of delivery: Print, E-mail, Save.  To Print or E-mail Full Text:

        Full Text: At the Result List, choose an article with full text available by clicking on the book icon at the left of the record.

    • Once the document has fully loaded, click on the PRINT/E-MAIL button.
