This Pennsylvania State Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators-approved program is designed to provide the knowledge for those interested in pursuing a career in the long- term care administration field.

This online program satisfies the 120-hour education component as part of the Nursing Home Administration (NHA) exam application. The faculty of the PCOM NHA course are leaders in long-term care who will share their experiences in the clinical and managerial aspects of skilled nursing care. Nursing Home Administration 120-Hour Program Overview

This program consists of 16 courses, each 7.5 hours in length. The program is offered completely online, allowing learners to participate from any location. Each week, learners complete online course requirements asynchronously (on-demand recorded presentations) with an option to engage in a scheduled live interactive webinar each Tuesday. For those unable to attend these live webinars, learners may review these as recorded sessions. This course is divided into 16 weeks with the following schedule:

  • Wednesday – Monday: Review assigned on-demand recording(s).
  • Tuesday (10 a.m. - 1 p.m.): Virtual speaker discussion. During these sessions, speakers will highlight and elaborate on key concepts, cover any new regulations, and address any questions. These live sessions will be recorded if you are unable to attend the virtual session.

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of quality of care issues including falls, pressure ulcers, medication errors and elopements as well as quality of life issues including the exercise of resident rights and choice of therapeutic activities and the role of the nursing home administrator in the management of these issues.
  • Discuss how the process of clinical assessments support the Minimum Data Set and the transmission of information used for reimbursement and the documentation to prevent allegations of fraud.
  • Describe the survey process and the responsibilities of administrators, department heads and line staff for each resident every day.
  • Implement and oversee nursing home operations that are compliant with all state, federal, and local regulations as well as with standards of geriatric services.
  • Describe the key leadership responsibilities of the nursing home administrator including principles of ethical decision making, corporate compliance, communication and public relations.
  • Analyze financial reports, key performance indicators, and the business strategies for success of the nursing home organization.

Shifa Auti, DPT

Dr. Auti has been the director of rehabilitation and a physical therapist at Monumental Post Acute Care (MPAC) for the past nine years. She received her bachelor’s degree from Sancheti College of Orthopedics in India, master’s degree from University of Indianapolis and her Doctorate from Utica College in New York. Dr. Auti is passionate about patient care and is constantly looking for challenges to enhance her skill set.

Dr. Auti teaches Rehabilitation in Skilled Nursing Facilities

Joy Bartley, MS RD

Joy Bartley has been the Registered Dietitian at Monumental Post-Acute Care (MPAC) for the past 16 years. She also managed the food service operations of the 180-bed facility.

Ms. Bartley received her BS in dietetics and nutrition from Miami University of Ohio and an MA in nutritional education from Columbia University. She is ServSafe certified and has extensive knowledge of both the food service management and clinical needs of long-term care residents, including individuals with AIDS and other complex medical issues.

Ms. Bartley teaches Dietary Department and Resident Care.

Ben Bongers, MA

Mr. Bongers holds a master’s degree in gerontology from San Francisco State University’s School of Social Work. He has extensive experience in working in human resources for the Health and Science Center, Inc., an executive health care search firm that specializes in long-term care since 2018. He formerly was a full-time caregiver as well as an opera singer for many operatic companies around the world.

Ben Bongers teaches Personnel Management and Labor Relations.

Laura Finn, CGP

Laura Finn is a clinical pharmacist and a member of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP). In 2020, she was awarded the Professor of the Year by the ASCP. She is an associate professor of pharmacy at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy which is now part of St. Joseph’s University.

Ms. Flynn teaches the pharmacy portion of Health Support Services.

Grace Harrison, MPA NHA

Ms. Harrison has been instrumental in the education of nursing home administrators since 1980. She has been working in long-term care facilities for more than six decades and continues to provide support and guidance in areas of administration, maintenance, housekeeping and dietary management.

Ms. Harrison received a BA in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and an MPA from Penn State University.

Grace Harrison teaches Facility Support Services and Administration and Medical Records.

David R. Hoffman, JD FCPP

David Hoffman is a former Assistant United States Attorney, the Chief Counsel to the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, and an Assistant District Attorney for the City of Philadelphia. He is the principle in David Hoffman and Associates, a corporate compliance firm which provides consulting services as well as state and federal monitoring of skilled nursing facilities/owners who have entered into Corporate Integrity Agreements (CIAs) with the Department of Justice. Mr. Hoffman is a practice professor of law at Drexel University’s Kline School of Law.

Mr. Hoffman teaches Third Party Reimbursement.

Paul Nordeman, MBA NHA

Paul Nordeman is President and Chief Executive Officer of Meadowood Corporation. Meadowood is Life Planned Community (Continuing Care Retirement Community) in Montgomery County. Mr. Nordeman has over 40 years of operations and financial management experience in the healthcare and senior living industry. He began his career in the acute care setting, working for over twenty years in hospital settings and advancing to CFO within the Holy Redeemer Health System.

Mr. Nordeman earned his Nursing Home Administrator’s license and served as an administrator at the Philadelphia Protestant Home (PPH) for three years.

He received a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Temple University in 1985 and a master’s of health administration from the University of St. Francis in 2003.

Mr. Nordeman teaches Fiscal Management, Budgeting and Accounting.

Ilene Warner-Maron, PhD RN-BC CWCN CALA NHA FCPP

Dr. Warner-Maron is the program director for the PCOM NHA program. She has worked in nursing home management since 1990 and in nursing home education since 1995. Dr. Warner-Maron is a registered nurse and licensed nursing home administrator with certifications in gerontological nursing, wound care, assisted living administration, frailty and infection prevention in long-term care. She is an assistant professor in the Department of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at PCOM.

Dr. Warner-Maron graduated from the Albert Einstein School of Nursing and received a BS in sociology from Philadelphia University. She has a master’s degree in gerontology from the University of Pennsylvania, a post-master’s degree in health administration from St. Joseph’s University and a master’s degree in law and social policy from a Bryn Mawr College. In 2007, she received a PhD in health policy from the University of the Sciences.

Dr. Warner-Maron teaches Gerontology/Diseases of Aging; The Nursing Department and Resident Care Management; Social Services/Activities; Risk Management; The Role of Government, Strategic Planning/Marketing; Health Support Services; Understanding Regulations/Deficiencies and QA; Federal/State regulations and Administration/Organization and Management of the LTC Facility.

This course is a Pennsylvania state-required course that prepares you for the 120 Hour Core of Knowledge Program. Completion of this course satisfies the 120-hour education component of the NHA exam candidate application. This course must be completed in its entirety to receive a certificate of completion. Each learner must complete each of the 16 modules before the end of the program.

Each of the 16 modules include an on-demand video, post-test and virtual speaker discussion.

The registration fee is $3,000 for the full 16-module program.

All registration is completed online. Registration and payment must be received at least five days prior to the start of the first class.
